Operations Engineer (learn DevOps) (work from home) TL261

SNOMED International is hiring a Linux-skilled operations engineer to work from home as part of a small, innovative, technical operations function, mastering automation to become a DevOps engineer.

At SNOMED International we develop the world’s most comprehensive clinical terminology, benefiting healthcare and clinical advancement worldwide - our product, SNOMED CT, is an important part of the eHealthcare ecosystems of 35 member nations. We also provide open source online tools and services that support the global SNOMED community. Our geographically distributed technical team includes highly skilled software developers, operations and tooling engineers, delivering and maintaining specialist software tools and services for internal and external users.

Guided by our technical operations manager and, collaborating with the wider technical services team, your role is to: provide automation to help our developers deliver well run CI environments; support the cloud based infrastructure of SNOMED International; enable the provision of stable services to external customers and internal users; to explore new technologies and turn your ideas into innovative solutions to support and maintain our services; and to help us establish our technical operations function as a modern, efficient and robust service which provides effective solutions as we continue to grow.

This is a challenging and fast-paced environment, working with people who embrace change and share a desire to use technology effectively and to find better, more efficient ways of working. We offer progression within the growing field of DevOps, and would be willing to consider applicants with a strong background in infrastructure and/or cloud engineering that wish to develop their skills in a very hands on role as DevOps engineer.

Upcoming projects in the team

  • Migrating and consolidating our services to a single cloud provider, AWS
  • Architecting for future serverless infrastructure - implementing Consul.io
  • Automating the orchestration of services in our products
  • Practice and process improvement around our deployment pipeline, enabling our development and ops teams to work effectively
  • Creating innovative ways to leverage the power of available AWS technologies

We're looking for

  • Someone flexible and who is comfortable working inclusively in a distributed team
  • A self-starter, who thrives on autonomy
  • A methodical approach with strong troubleshooting skills
  • Solid Unix/Linux stack experience
  • Appreciation of DevOps principles and keen to learn effective automation
  • Familiar with operating infrastructure in the cloud, e.g. AWS or Google Cloud
  • An appreciation of good policy and clear documentation

Salary and benefits

  • £40,000 – £45,000 or equivalent
