Platform Engineer / DevOps (Cambridge) TL225

Third Light is seeking a Platform / DevOps Engineer with strong Linux systems skills to help advance our growing SaaS infrastructure and to improve our automation.

We can equally consider someone with less experience who is ready for a step up.

We’re a technology-driven software business with ambition. Our requirements necessitate custom-built server infrastructure, and we're now ready for someone to help shape and deliver on our infrastructure development roadmap, in collaboration with our Technology Director.

It's a technical position with plenty of project work, enabling you to take initiative, be deeply involved in scoping and implementing new practices and technologies, and to choose and make your own tools - free from the frustrations of a traditional, rigid enterprise.

Above all, we're looking for someone who wants to build and run great infrastructure.

Example initiatives
  • Improving our instrumentation, metrics and monitoring
  • Continuously improving our security, failover, resilience and disaster recovery mechanisms
  • Demonstrating compliance with security, quality and reliability standards
  • Automated orchestration of services in our product (e.g. Kubernetes)
  • Design and deliver regional platforms, using e.g. AWS, GCP or private servers

We're looking for
  • Someone proactive; a do-er with an engineering streak and who doesn't reinvent the wheel
  • A methodical, automation-oriented approach
  • An appreciation of good policy and clear documentation
  • Proven routing, switching and networking skills, for example, on Cisco IOS or JunOS
  • A good understanding of Linux software packaging
  • A pragmatist, who values using the right tool for the job ahead of an ideology or vendor preference
  • Strong scripting skills, using any of: Go, Perl, Python, Ruby, Shell, Tcl etc.
  • Someone ready to move into Mid or Senior-level Platforms Engineer or DevOps jobs in Cambridge, such as: DevOps Engineer | Infrastructure Engineer | Site Reliability Engineer | Cloud Engineer | Linux Engineer | Linux Systems Administrator | Systems Developer | Systems Engineer | etc.

Location

  • just outside Cambridge; on a cycle route, on the bus route, and commutable from Cambridge city centre, Bury St Edmunds, Ely, Huntingdon, Newmarket, Peterborough, Saffron Walden, St. Neots etc.
  • Drivers licence and own vehicle is required, for occasional trips to the datacentre (Maidenhead and Milton Keynes).
